Context

Why it matters

v2.1.277 makes AGENTS.md the project-instruction file whenever CLAUDE.md is missing, and you change that path under Project instructions in /config. Repos that already keep AGENTS.md for other coding agents can share that file instead of maintaining a parallel CLAUDE.md that drifts. A leftover CLAUDE.md still wins, so delete duplicates rather than keeping two copies. This mapping is not on Bedrock, Vertex, or Foundry, so those hosts should keep CLAUDE.md. Headless and SDK (claude -p) startup also no longer waits on the per-directory CLAUDE.md lookup before the first turn, which fits putting instructions in one known file at the project root.

2. In the project root, keep AGENTS.md and omit CLAUDE.md so v2.1.277 loads AGENTS.md: ls CLAUDE.md AGENTS.md 2>/dev/null; test ! -f CLAUDE.md && test -f AGENTS.md && echo "Claude Code will load AGENTS.md"

3. Open Claude Code, run /config, and set "Project instructions" to AGENTS.md (unavailable on Bedrock, Vertex, or Foundry).

4. If CLAUDE.md only duplicates existing AGENTS.md, delete CLAUDE.md so Claude Code reads the shared AGENTS.md instead of the Claude-only copy.
